ORH Director Recognized by American College of Preventive Medicine

Each year the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) honors the legacy of physician and educator Daniel S. Blumenthal, MD through the annual award and seminar addressing barriers to accessing healthcare across populations. This year ACPM recognized four individuals with the Blumenthal Award for their work in promoting and advancing rural health initiatives.

Dr. Peter Kaboli, MD, MS, Executive Director, VHA Office of Rural Health (ORH) was a distinguished awardee honored for his contributions to rural health. In addition to leading ORH, Dr. Kaboli continues to care for his Veteran patients at the Iowa City VA Medical Center. He is also Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

Dr. Kaboli was recognized alongside other notable rural health influencers including Tom Morris, MPA, Associate Administrator, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Office of Rural Health Policy; Hilda Heady, MSW, past President, National Rural Health Association; and Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, President and CEO, National Association of Community Health Centers.

“Rural communities are the heart of our nation, yet too often they face unique and persistent barriers to healthcare access,” said Dr. Ryung Suh, President of the American College of Preventive Medicine. “By advancing preventive and primary care in these settings, we not only improve health outcomes but strengthen the resilience of every community. Ensuring that every American — regardless of geography — can access high-quality, preventive care is fundamental to protecting our nation’s well-being.”

ACPM is dedicated to the practice of preventive medicine and public health and focused on improving the health and quality of life of individuals, families, communities, and populations through disease prevention, health promotion, and heath policy initiatives. The annual Blumenthal Lecture and Award remain a cornerstone of ACPM’s efforts to honor and amplify the work being done to drive positive change and create a healthier future.
