VA and Community Provider Training

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) strives to share its research and medical approaches to Veteran care. A variety of free trainings that include continuing medical education credits are available on MyVeHu and VHA TRAIN VA training platforms. The Office of Rural Health identified the courses below as beneficial for rural Veteran care.

ORH Programs

The Rural Health Training Initiative (RHTI) enables allied health professionals to spend part of their time at a rural VA facility working with patients under the supervision and guidance of a VA health care professional/preceptor. Through a mix of acacemic learning and hands-on in-person training at a VA medical center, students gain a better understanding of rural health care, rural Veterans and the VA health care system. The interdisciplinary program focus areas include Rural Geriatric Health Care, Primary Care and Mental Health Integration (PACT) and Telehealth. The initiative is intended to develop a clinical education infrastructure at non-traditional training sites which includes both stipend and non-stipend funding, which will allow VA facilities to expand health professions (Associated Health, Dentist, Nursing, and Physician) training to additional rural VA locations. A few RHTI programs and locations include:

If interested in finding out more about RHTI, call 202-632-8615 or email the Office of Rural Health. Students should work directly with their college or university, or can contact a local VA medical center about opportunities.
